General Information
One of the oldest cities in Europe, Varna was occupied by the Thracian culture around 1200 BC. Towards the end of the 17th century BC, the Miletians founded a trading colony on the site of present day Varna. The region was conquered by Alexander the Great in 335 BC, and fell into Roman hands at the beginning of the 1st century AD. Public bath houses from this period are still intact to this day. During the Middle Ages, control of the region shifted between Byzantine and Bulgarian rule several times. The crusaders fought one of their last losing battles outside the city walls of Varna. The Battle of Varna marked the beginning of Ottoman rule over Bulgaria, which lasted from 1396 until 1878. By the late 1950’s, Varna had evolved into a tourist center for Eastern Europeans, as it was blocked from westerners by the Soviets, and was renamed Stalin. Heavy trade and industry between the city and the USSR allowed the city to flourish.
