General Information
Following the decline of the Roman Empire, the Bulgars, who crossed the Danube from the north in 679, took control of the region that is now Bulgaria. The country bears the name of the Bulgars, although their culture died out and was replaced by Slavic language, writing, and religion. In 1396, the Ottoman Empire invaded Bulgaria, converting it into a Turkish province until 1878. In the First Balkan War, which lasted from 1912-1913, Bulgaria and the other members of the Balkan League fought against Turkey to regain Balkan territory. They saw Macedonia as an integral part of their country, so when Bulgaria received only a small part of the country, they set off the Second Balkan War, which they lost. Bulgaria joined Germany in World War I in the hope of again gaining Macedonia. They fought on the side of the Nazis in World War II until Russia declared war on this Balkan country, when they switched to the Allies. After the collapse of the USSR, Bulgaria embarked on a political transformation in the direction of a parliamentary democracy. The first free elections were held in 1990, which were won by the Bulgarian Socialist Party. At the beginning of the 21st century, Bulgaria finally experienced major economic and political improvements; it became a NATO member in 2004, and joined the European Union in 2007.
Bulgarian culture is one of the richest and most varied in the world; the country is influenced by numerous ancient civilizations, including the Romans, Ancient Greeks, Slavs, and Bulgars. For the bulk of the middle ages, Bulgaria was seen as the Slavic center of the world. Due to the relatively warm climate and fertile soil, Bulgaria enjoys excellent growth-conditions for a wide range of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. This leads to a considerable diversity in the nation’s cuisine. Bulgarian cuisine, famous for its rich salads served at every meal, also boasts assorted dairy products, delectable wines, and regional alcoholic drinks. They also have a penchant for pastries, like the Banitsa, a layered mixture of whisked eggs and brine cheese between a filo pastry.
