History

Prior to becoming a part of the kingdom of Hungary, the area where Slovakia is located, was part of the first west Slavic state, Great Moravia. Then, as part of the kingdom of Hungary, Slovakia became part of the Hapsburg Empire. After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Slovaks and Czechs formed Czechoslovakia this lasted until 1993 when it broke apart and both countries became independent states.

Cities

Bratislava is the country’s largest and capital city, with a population of just over 400,000. It the political and economic center of the country. It is served by the Bratislava Milan Rastislav Stefanik Airport, an international and largest airport in the country. With HAPPYCAR, you can choose to pick your hire car up at the airport, hotel or the provider's airport. The city has a fantastic medieval Old Town as well as some communist era architecture. Major sights include the Bratislava Castle, from here you can enjoy views of the city and also of Austria. St. Martin's Cathedral is the oldest church in the city and located below the castle and the Slavin Monument, a monument to the soviet casualties from the liberation of the city in the Second World War. Being the capital, there are also some top museums that are well worth a visit, such as the National Science Museum, the National Gallery and the Jewish Community Museum.

Castles

Slovakia has one of the highest numbers of castles in the world, so a visit to one with your hire car is highly recommended. Situated above the small town of Spisske Podhradie, is one of the largest castles on the continent and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Spis Castle was built in the 12th century.

One of the most popular sites in the country is Bojnice Castle, found in the small town of the same name. It is a romantic castle built in the 12th century and it is an absolutely stunning castle where you can take a tour of it if you wish. The castle's gardens are also fantastic and well worth a walk through, one of the best zoos in the country can be found in the gardens.

Culture

Take your hire car Slovakia to the UNESCO Heritage listed village of Vilkolinec, located near the town of Ruzomberok, in central Slovakia. The village is worth a visit because it is one of the few remaining folk villages on the continent, with traditional feature of an old European settlement, log houses and churches. There is also a museum here that has artifacts telling the story of daily life and work in the old settlements.

Nature

Slovakia is home to nine national parks that you can visit with your hire car. The most recommended are the Slovak Paradise National Park, Mala Fatra National Park, and the Tatra National Park.

No matter what you plan on doing with your trip here, a short city break or a tour of its castles and national parks, having a hire car Slovakia gives you the freedom to get out and do it.
