General information

The name Salzburg is German for Saltfortress, from when large amounts of salt would be transported on the Salzburg River. The city is one of the oldest settlements in Austria - dating back to the Neolithic age, it was under Bavarian rule rill the 14th century from then to the early 1800's the city was independent and prospered due the salt mines. At the end of the Napoleonic war the city was again returned to Austria, and during the Second World War it was part of the German Reich. After the war the city become part of Austria and the capital of the state of Salzburg. The city is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the country, with its old town now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sights

Hohensalzburg Fortress was built in 1077 by archbishop Gebhard. It is the largest fully preserved fortress in central Europe, the castle has never been conquered by invading enemies. Located on top of a mountain, the castle offers visitors a fantastic view of the city and the surrounding mountains. Bizarrely there is also an area of the castle that offers a view of just the old executioner’s house. Within the castle there is now a museum dedicated to medieval weapons, torture instruments and life in the fortress as well as the Marionette Museum that can be found in the fortress cellar.

Hellbrunn Fortress was the summer palace of the old archbishops of the city, who would reside here in the summer days. It was built in the early 1600's. The palace gardens are famous for their trick water fountains, one of the best being the fountain hidden in seats surrounding a dinner table, spraying those who sat down.

The city's most famous child is the composer Mozart and you can visit the house where he was born on January 27, 1756. It was the home of the Mozart household from 1747 to 1773. The house is now a museum housing many musical instruments and information covering Mozart’s life, friendship and studies in Salzburg, Mozart at the theater and on the Mozart family themselves.

The current Salzburg Cathedral was built in the 17th century. The construction is stunning on the outside and the inside there are many items of interest inside such as the Baptismal Font, which was used for Mozart’s baptism, an organ surrounded by angels playing instruments. There is also an excavation museum with objects that have been excavated from an old roman villa and part of an old cathedral which were built on the cathedral's site.
