General information

The name Salzburg is German for Saltfortress, from when large amounts of salt would be transported on the Salzburg River. Hellbrunn Fortress was the summer palace of the old archbishops of the city, who would reside here in the summer days. It was built in the early 1600's. The palace gardens are famous for their trick water fountains, one of the best being the fountain hidden in seats surrounding a dinner table, spraying those who sat down.

The city's most famous child is the composer Mozart and you can visit the house where he was born on January 27, 1756. It was the home of the Mozart household from 1747 to 1773. The house is now a museum housing many musical instruments and information covering Mozart’s life, friendship and studies in Salzburg, Mozart at the theater and on the Mozart family themselves.

The current Salzburg Cathedral was built in the 17th century. The construction is stunning on the outside and the inside there are many items of interest inside such as the Baptismal Font, which was used for Mozart’s baptism, an organ surrounded by angels playing instruments.
