General Information
Newcastle was founded around 2,000 years ago as an important port connection to Hadrian’s Wall, and was the centre of the Industrial Revolution during the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, Newcastle has some of the most gorgeous Georgian architecture in Europe, with the likes of Grey Street being named the most beautiful street in the world. The de facto capital between Yorkshire and Scotland, Newcastle has now been reinvented as a cool urban center which, propelled by its proud inhabitants, makes it a vibrant UK destination.
To Do
Shopping is the name of the game in Newcastle – Eldon Square is one of the UK’s largest city center shopping complexes, and the Metrocentre is also Europe’s largest indoor shopping complex. Individual shoppers will also be riddled with choice in boutique-lined Market Street, High Bridge and Hood Street. A walk along the Quayside is a must, with the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the world’s only tilting bridge, framing the view. The arts are strong in Newcastle, and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art is an art-lover’s dream. Another great spot is Sage Gateshead, with a diverse range of musical events to enjoy while you’re there to fill up your days and nights.
Attractions
Northeast England has established a reputation as one of the most beautiful regions in Britain, and Newcastle is perfectly placed around areas of outstanding natural beauty to enjoy with a Newcastle car hire. Newcastle’s Castle Keep is one of the finest examples of a Northern Keep in the country with 2,000 years of history to delight the budding historian, whilst Grainger Town’s stunning neo-classical architecture is nowhere better visible than on the beautiful Grey Street. There are remains of Hadrian’s Wall, a World Heritage Site stone fortification built in AD 122 by the Roman Empire that you can view, along with the remains of the Roman fort Segedunum. A car hire in Newcastle can also take you to see the iconic Angel of the North, a modern sculpture that has come to define Northern England since its erection in 1998.
Eating
Newcastle features contemporary cuisine, exotic eateries and classy cocktail bars with something for everyone. Cafes are dotted all over the city for when you feel like taking a break from shopping, and there are also some unique treasures to be found – Blackfriars is housed in a medieval monastery in Newcastle’s city center, and is believed to be the oldest restaurant in the country. Stowell Street is home to Newcastle’s Chinatown, and an impressive array of Asian restaurants can be found here. With a Newcastle car rental you can also travel slightly further afield to Tynemouth Village, which offers a great selection of tea rooms for a more traditional British experience.

With over half of Gateshead comprised of mature woodland, riverbanks, ponds and wildflower meadows, it’s very easy to escape the bustle of the city for a more relaxed experience. Derwent Walk Country Park and Watergate Forest Park offer acres of woodland walks and waterside wildflower meadows where mining and industry once thrived and are now home to majestic Red Kites, while National Trust site Gibside includes a Palladian chapel and ruined 18th century house surrounded by acres of parkland just 15 minutes from the city centre.
