General information
Dating back to the 13th century, this state has a fascinating history, with the Teutonic forces in alliance with Poland, and by the 15th century Lithuania was the largest country in Europe, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. In the 16th century both Lithuania and Poland joined together in a commonwealth and following a series of defeats in the 18th century the country was partitioned with large amounts of Lithuania falling under Russian rule, only gaining independence after World War I. This was short-lived, however, with German occupation in 1940 and Soviet rule until the 1990s.
Vilnius
