Glasgow Airport started as an overflow for an RAF base in Abbotsinch in 1932, and was formally recognized commercially in 1966. Just six months later, it was recording over 1 million passengers and business would continue to grow. In the 70's the runway was extended for larger jets and an additional terminal was created. Together with another £55 million expansion in the late 80's, Glasgow Airport was able to accommodate 6 million passengers a year.
