The city originally started as a Celtic settlement which then went on to become the capital of the Roman area of Lower Pannonia. In the 9th century, the Hungarians arrived and through the 15th century, the city became the center of a powerful central European state. It also became a center piece during the Renaissance period. Sights
Buda is where most of the city’s best and most famous sights can be found. Home to the famous hill, where you can take in the stunning Royal Palace, completed in the 13th century. The Acuincum is a must, as it is a sort of open museum with artifacts and buildings from the old Roman city. Pest is found on the eastern side of the Danube and is the smaller of the two parts of the city. Despite being smaller it still has some great sights on offer. One of, if not the most impressive sight to see, is the Parliament building. This daunting and mightily impressive building was built in 1902 on the side of the Danube and it is roughly based on the houses of Parliament in London. Other sights include St. Stephan's Cathedral and the city park.
