Zürich attractions and Travel Tips

In just a short drive with your hire car from the Zurich Airport, you can get to Switzerland’s largest city and economic center. Use your Zurich car hire to explore this beautiful city at your own pace.

The city has a population of over 1 million in the greater area and 400,000 in the inner-city. The city is located on the River Zurich and on a good day offers a fantastic view of the alps. The city has something for everyone, beautiful historical buildings, wonderful museums and great cafes and bars.

Sights

Most of Zurich’s best sights can be found in its historic Old Town, such as its three main churches. The Großmunster was built between the 12 and 13th century, it is said that the site is on the burial grounds of Zurich’s saints and that Charlemagne’s horse fell over the tombs and decided to build a church here. The church is very significant to the history of the reformation in Switzerland. The Fraümunster was built on a site dating back to the 9th century, this stunning church has some great stained glass designs. St. Peter's Church is home to the clock tower which can be seen throughout the inner-city. Part of this dates back to the year 1000, but most of it dates back to the early 1700's when the church was built. Zurich has the first protestant church and all of these church are stunning and well worth a visit.

Lake Promenade is the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by, on a hot day sit outside one of the many cafes or bars and just enjoy your time in the great city when you walk around the lake.

Museums

Kunsthaus or the Museum of Modern Art, was built in 1910, and is one of the most popular museums in Zurich housing a rich collection of art dating back to the middle ages up to the present day. Showcasing paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and video, mainly Swiss sources.

The Swiss National Museum is located right next to the city’s main train station. It houses the country’s largest historical and cultural collection. The building dates back to the early 1900's and is a stunning building, almost in the style of a French chateau. The museum showcases the history of the country from the prehistoric times to the modern day.

Museum Rietberg showcases collections of world history and art, with most of the pieces are from an old collection massed by Baron von der Heydt, who donated all the pieces to the city in 1952. The pieces vary from Islamic to Chinese and African to Buddhist art.

Excursion

Take your car hire Zurich to Saint Galleon, which is a perfect day trip. This city is a stunning part of the German speaking area.
