History
The city dates back to the roman times, one can still experience its roman past by visiting the roman settlement in the Scitarjevo area, the first mention of the city of Zagreb dates back to the 11th century, during this period the city was divided into two parts, one for the Clergy and the cathedral and the other part for the workers, this remained until the mid-1800's when the two areas were united. The city became the capital of the newly independent Croatia following the break up of Yugoslavia.
Sights
At the heart of the city is the Trg Josipa Jelacica, the main square, there are many cafes and restaurants here where you can sit back and watch the world go by. The square is named after the man who unified the city and who also led troops against Hungary in the hope of more autonomy for his people, Ban Jelacic.

The Lotrscak tower was built in the 13th century to protect the city’s southern gate from invading forces. There is a legend that a cannonball fired from the tower blew a rooster to bits and that this act demoralized the Turkish would be attackers that they were unsuccessful in their attack.
