Background Information

The airport was built on the remains of a Roman villa, and the site has a long connection with aviation. In 1910, it was the spot where Edwin Roland Moon took off and landed his monoplane, and in 1932, the airport became an important arm of the RAF. A few years later the Spitfire was tested for the first time at Southampton Airport, and today a full-size sculpture of the iconic plane is found at the terminal entrance. In 1990, BAA purchased the site and three years later a major redevelopment was undertaken – after four years there was a massive spike in passenger numbers, and today Southampton Airport is regarded as one of Europe’s most modern regional airports.

A number of great facilities are to be found inside Southampton Airport. Mitchell’s Kitchen & Bar, named after RJ Mitchell, the designer of the Spitfire, offers a wide range of food and drink. World Duty Free is also available in the departure lounge, with a large selection of affordable items to take home with you. If you don’t want to carry all your purchases on your trip around the UK, you can leave them at the airport and collect them when you’re ready to fly out.
