General Information
Before the Japanese chocked off the country in 1910, South Korea was ruled by an unbroken line of kings reaching back for almost two millennia. In 1953, the catastrophic Korean War’s conclusion split the peninsula at the 38th degree parallel, effectively cutting off the north form the south; families and friends were separated from each other, some never to see each other again. Despite the Korean War and the destruction of much of the peninsula, South Korea has managed to become an important commercial hub with a dynamic economy. With the aid of the United States government, and the fact that South Korea embraced democracy, the country has regained its sovereignty, although the US still enforces a noticeable military presence in the country. Modernization and a fast-paced lifestyle have led to a modern skyline and neon-light saturated streets. However, South Korea's rural areas still retain much of the country’s cultural heritage; relatively untouched by the economic boom of the 1970’s, some rural inhabitants have never set eyes on foreigners.
South Koreans are fiercely proud of their heritage, and have to an extent retained their cultural identity. The people are incredibly welcoming and warm, and are keen on meeting foreigners; do not be surprised if you leave behind new friends on your departure from the peninsula. Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, is a humdrum of frenzied activity; neon lights, a wave of delightful sounds and smells, and numerous temples and palaces make this city a favorite stop for tourists. The many 14th century palaces which surround the city center are a favorite stop for tourists; these sumptuous structures include Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung; the former is the past seat of power of ancient Korean Kings, and is the most well-known of all the palaces.

A drive to the southeastern coast of the peninsula will bring you to Geumjeong Mountain; outdoor enthusiasts will be especially taken by the wonderful and scenic hiking trails the mountain has to offer. Further north along the coast you will reach the Seoraksan National Park, South Korea's most popular national park. Seoraksan consists of towering rock pinnacles, dense alpine forests, and is peppered with beautiful wild flowers.
Off the southwest coast lays Dadohae Haesang Maritime National Park, the so called ‘Land of 10,000 islands’. The largest of the islands have fishing ports and small villages, but most are basically uninhabited. One of the most spectacular sights is presented when fog rises from the glassy sea, casting the rock formations in eerie shapes. Beaches, although infrequent, are incredibly beautiful, and are littered with millions of tiny stones, shells, and shorebirds. Inhabitants of the islands center their life on the ocean; fishing, seaweed, kelp, clams, forms the base of their subsistence.
