Quebec attractions and Travel Tips

Québec City, the capital of its eponymous province and one of the most beautifully located cities in all of North America, is a shining jewel in the French-Canadian crown and an incredibly entertaining city to explore. HAPPYCAR is here to help you find the best car hire Québec has to offer so you can take full advantage of this prosperous city, and a direct car hire Québec Airport is also available. We check the prices of international and local providers so that you don’t have to check each website to provide you with the best deals to make your money go further on a rental car that fits your specific vacation needs!

General Information

Québec's history is remarkable, and perched over a cliff looking out to the seaway, Québec’s old town dominates the skyline and remains the only city in North America with its original city walls. Outside of the old town, plenty of things are available to see and do, including visiting the iconic St. Lawrence River,so a car hire in Québec is recommended. Over ninety percent of its 750,000 population are francophone and the general vibe of the city is decidedly French-orientated, with some stunning European-inspired architecture that is hard to find anywhere else in North America and worth the trip on its own.

To Do

The old city is a fantastic place to spend some time, be it gazing on the wonderful historic sights or popping into some of the artisan shops. Once you’re done with the clustered buildings and cobbled streets, you can take in a few lungfuls of crisp air in the open space of the Battlefields Park, a 267-acre strip of land with gorgeous riverfront vistas. With some excellent museums in Québec City, the National Museum of Fine Arts, located close to the Battlefields Park, and the Museum of Civilization are particular draws. The many festivals, such as the Winter Carnival, are storied traditions that really bring the city to life.

Attractions

The mainstay of heritage sites in Québec City lie scattered in the old quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, neatly divided into the upper and lower town, and a worthy attraction in itself. The Quartier de Petit-Champlain is the city’s oldest street, narrow and cobbled and built in 1685. It also has the title of the oldest shopping area in North America. The Chateau Frontenac is perhaps Québec’s icon, and the most photographed hotel in North America. Another dominating feature of Québec is the Citadelle, North America’s largest fort, covering 1.2 square miles in the anticipation of an American invasion that never came. Besides this there are so many little historical townhouses and settlements all around the area that can be explored with a Québec City car hire.

Eating

Québec City has all manner of traditional eats that you can find, many of them cheap. The tourtière québecoise is a meat pie, or poutine fries which is gravy, and cheese curds, are very popular for tourists and locals alike. Thanks to the flat countryside surrounding the city, there is usually a great range of specialty cheeses to be found. Cafe culture is profuse in Québec, as is the standard in France, so expect a quaint selection from which to choose. In the winter, a local drink called caribou is worth a try and includes all sorts of alcoholic spirits, liquors and wines.

Excursions

The area around Québec is stunning, and nearby are some fantastic getaway destinations that a Québec car rental can facilitate. Just 30 minutes away from the city, the Montmorency Falls stand 30 meters taller than Niagara Falls, which you can visit when you go to Buffalo, NY or Toronto, and is a beautiful natural gem. Both scenic cruises and drives along the St. Lawrence River come highly recommended. Only 2.5 hours away is the vibrant city of Montreal. For a slightly longer excursion along the south of Canada, Ottawa is 4.5 hour’s drive and an excellent next destination to continue your trip. Wherever you choose to go, HAPPYCAR will make sure you get the best deal on a car hire!
