General Information
In the first half of the 16th century, the great Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan claimed the Philippines for the Spanish crown. Over the course of the next 300 years, Spanish Jesuit priests and conquistadors spread the ideas of Catholicism and Spanish culture across the archipelago. Spanish colonial rule over the Philippines was far from tranquil; Filipinos staged numerous uprisings, with the final one in 1896 resulted in the eventual independence of the nation. During this final revolt, Jose Rizal, a famous Filipino national hero, was executed by the Spanish occupiers. Spain, whose naval power was defeated by the United Sates in the Battle of Manila Bay, ceded control of the Philippines to the United States government in 1898. General Emilio Aguinaldo, a hero of the previous revolution, led the rebellion against American rule; this bloody conflict lasted three years, and claimed the lives of thousands of Filipinos and Americans alike. In 1902, an armistice was signed between the two powers, with the United States relinquishing their desire to enforce colonial control over the Philippines. Filipinos began to take more control over governance of the country, and in 1935, was established as a self-governing commonwealth. The outbreak of WWII brought about the invasion of the Japanese Empire, who inflicted atrocious acts on the Filipinos, leading to over a million deaths. After the war, the Philippines gained its long awaited independence, and began the long and arduous task of rebuilding the broken nation. Modern Philippines is characterized by a booming economy, often called the next ‘Asian Tiger Economy’.
