In 2006, the airport went through some major changes which catapulted it into the forefront of innovation and progress in the industry. This renovation was undertaken in three separate stages. The first consisted of the expansion of the main passenger terminal; at a cost of approximately $21 million, new boarding gates, bridges, lounges, and operating space were added to the infrastructure of the facility. The second expansion phase of the airport, known as Terminal Muelle Norte, cost $60 million; a completely new terminal with 12 additional gates was built. The third expansion is still underway, and is slated to be completed in 2016.
