General Information
Home to royalty and scholars for over 800 years, Oxford is a bustling cosmopolitan town that blends the ancient and modern. Oxford is known throughout the world as a center of learning and Oxford university is the first thing that people associate with the town. Also called The City of Dreaming Spires due to the harmonious architecture of Oxford’s university buildings, the buildings in Oxford reflect examples of every single English architectural period since the arrival of the Saxons in the 5th century. Oxford is an international city and its honey-colored brick adds an intimate feeling to proceedings.
To Do
There is plenty to do in Oxford that can keep you occupied for days and while it is a fairly small area, a car hire in Oxford can give you real peace of mind and also opens up activities further out. One popular activity is college hopping, clustered around cobbled streets and a great way to feel the individual character of the colleges. Nearby is Radcliffe Square, England’s first circular library and beautiful all year round, and you can also visit the university church of St Mary the Virgin. Another popular choice is to go punting, especially around Magdalen Bridge, but beware – it is harder than it looks.
Attractions
Of course the colleges are a big draw for the city, and each college has a unique history and something interesting to offer in terms of striking architecture or historical notoriety. Oxford’s museums are another star attraction, featuring a dizzying array of quality exhibitions all over the city. The Ashmolean Museum is the oldest public museum in England, founded in 1683 and displaying ancient Eastern and Western art. The Oxford University Museum of Natural History houses the university’s zoological and geological collections. Here you can find, among other things, the famous Oxford Dodo. The Bodleian Library is one of the oldest libraries in Europe and the second largest in the UK, and well worth a tour.
Eating
Oxford welcomes many visitors and has a wide array of cuisines from which to choose. In the Victorian-built Covered Market you can find a throwback to the old world, with handmade meat pies, fishmongers and bakers all under one roof. There are also many local cheeses and beers that are always on offer. Typically, North Oxford features more gentrified areas with fancy restaurants and slick bars, and the South end, around Carfax, diverse where you can find cheap food from all over the world here.
Excursions
An Oxford car hire is perfect to open up the surrounding countryside and to explore the greater county of Oxfordshire. Eight miles north of the city lies Woodstock, an important town with royal associations going back to Saxon times and a very pretty place to visit on your way to another landmark, Blenheim Palace. The palace was eventually built after 1704 and became a monument to Baroque architecture. The Palace is also the birthplace of Winston Churchill, with an exhibition there where you can go to learn more about his early life. Situated fairly centrally in South England, Oxford is an excellent stepping stone to other important cities in the country, such as Bristol in the Northwest and London further east, all easily reachable with an Oxford car rental from HAPPYCAR.
