General Info On Little Rock
Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe a famous French explorer, left France in order to establish a trading post in current day the U.S.A. When he arrived, he traveled along the Red River and at one point, after traveling upstream along the Arkansas River, he found two distinct rock formations. He named the larger one which was located on the North bank as le rocher francais while the smaller one on the Southern became Le Petit Rocher. It is from the smaller Southern bank rock formations (Le petit Roche) that the name Little Rock was derived, particularly because the city was near the Southern bank. This particular rock was a landmark that enabled earlier explorers such as Jean-Baptiste to remember the route on the Arkansas River. Furthermore, it later became a river crossing and this helped the city expand because of the numerous stops by travelers.
