Kyōto attractions and Travel Tips

A walk through Kyoto is to step into Japan’s antiquated history, with an unparalleled glut of temples, gardens and shrines to explore. This ancient capital served as the center of politics and rich culture for over 1,000 years, and despite the encroachment of modern influences the city remains staunchly traditional and steeped in daily ritual. Old ladies emerge from their old houses to ladle water onto their stoops, tofu sellers still abound in the shopping districts, and public baths, a staple of Kyoto culture since forever, remains furiously popular. Kyoto, while a small city, is surrounded by mountains on three sides which make for excellent excursions, and with just a few clicks you can have your Kyoto car rental ready to go at an affordable price. HAPPYCAR is here to help you find the best car hire Kyoto has to offer so you can take full advantage of this beautiful city, and cars from a number of airports, including a car hire Kansai Airport, is also available, with excellent road links to take you to the ancient capital. General Information

Kyoto takes wabi sabi – the essence of simple, transient beauty – down to a fine point, with tea ceremonies, rock gardens and floral arrangement classes abounding. But it is the Philosopher’s Walk, around the famous temples and shrines amid changing seasons, which continues to amaze even today. Only once the city became the Imperial capital around 800 AD did Japanese culture really start to break away from its Chinese predecessors, and its cuisine is a fantastic example of the Japanese way of life, from ultra-refined cuisine, kaiseki, to run-of-the-mill ramen. But there are also plenty of international cuisines on offer, executed to Japanese precision. The vast amount of culture in Kyoto is mind-boggling, but possible to get a good feel within a couple of days. Over the centuries, Kyoto was ravaged by wars and fires, but was earnestly rebuilt and was spared from air raids and the atomic bomb during World War II thanks to its historically priceless value. This can be encapsulated no better than in the visually breathtaking Kinkaku-ji or the zen masterpiece Ryoan-ji with its famous zen rock garden, a must on anybody’s itinerary. Even better is to duck behind the backstreets and find some forgotten temple or new place to eat. Add in the dizzying array of handicrafts on offer around the city, and you’ll want one more night in that old Ryokan.

Using a car hire in Kyoto

Because of the splendor of the Kyoto it is hard to remember that there is so much to see in its surrounding areas, which are home to so many important pockets of Japanese history. A car rental Kyoto can take you west to Arashiyama, famous for its boat ride up the Hozu-gawa gorge and its monkey park. Just south of Kyoto is Uji, a stalwart guardian of Japan’s classical past and home to the magnificent Byodo-in, whose graceful Phoenix Hall is a masterpiece of Japanese architecture, along with the green tea fields which support Kyoto’s cultural tradition. While you’re in the area, Osaka is right next door, its commercial splendor just waiting to be enjoyed. And a day’s drive away takes you to the other side of the country to Tokyo, the new capital and home to everything cutting-edge. There is so much to see in this part of the world, and Kyoto car hire can help you uncover some of the many mysteries just waiting to be discovered. The HAPPYCAR team wishes you a pleasant journey!
