General Information

Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by Rajah Abdullah, then ruler of Selangor State, who sent Chinese prospectors to seek out tin deposits near the confluence of the Gombak and Klang River. Settlers, mainly British investors, Malay farmers, and Chinese laborers, began to pour into the region in search of riches. Frank Swettenham, the British Resident of Selangor State, saw to it that Kuala Lumpur be modernized and molded into a proper capital city; he commissioned the design of solid, imposing structures. During WWII, the Japanese engaged in terrible acts of brutality against the Chinese living in Malaysia, killing at least 5,000 in the first few weeks of the occupation. With the Japanese surrender in 1945, Malaysia suffered political and social strife, with race-wars between Chinese and Malays breaking out. Thousands of Chinese lost their homes in the aftermath of the riots, and the Muslim Malay community consolidated their control over the country. In 1996, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed approved the construction of a new political capital 20 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur at Putrajaya, which was made the official seat of the Malaysian government in 1999. However, Kuala Lumpur still remains the legislative center and seat of parliament.
