The historical beginning of the Johannesburg we know today was founded on the discovery of gold and diamonds. The gold rush of Johannesburg began in the 1880's. At this time it was a rough and disorganized city full of miners from other continents. Johannesburg has a subtropical highland climate due to the city’s location on the Highveld plateau. The summer months of October – April, offer sunny, hot days with afternoon thunderstorms that cool provide cool comfortable evenings. The winter months, May – September are typically dry and filled with sun but cool off dramatically once the sun goes down.
Attractions
Kruger National Park was South Africa’s first national park in 1926 and today it is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. The Big Five game animals can be found in the park. This includes the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros.
The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 30 miles northwest of Johannesburg. There are complexes of limestone caves with 2.3 million year-old fossils. The most famous discoveries include the Australopithecus Africanus nicknamed Mrs. Ples found in 1947. The site’s name, Cradle of Humankind, comes from finding some of the oldest Hominin fossils ever discovered. Some of the fossils date back 3.5 million years.
