General Info

Flensburg, established around the 13th century by Danish settlers, quickly became an important merchant city due to its favorable location at the innermost end of the sheltered deep-water Flensburg Fjord. The 16th and 18th centuries saw the biggest economic boom for the growing city, with Flensburg merchants travelling as far as Greenland and the Caribbean. In 1864, the Second Schleswig War led to the city changing hands from the Danish Kingdom to the Kingdom of Prussia. Due to border issues and a large number of Danes residing in the city, the League of Nations in 1920 called for a Plebiscite to decide the matter. This marked the last territorial alterations in Flensburg, where some of the northernmost neighborhoods were ceded to Denmark, the vast majority of the population however voted to remain German. This close connection with trade and the Danish is succinctly portrayed in the label on the local cult brew, Flensburger Pils where the label depicts the royal Danish Lions and a merchant ship.

The city offers many interesting and exciting attractions, all of which in one way or another can be linked to its colorful history. The harbor area is a great place to enjoy a scrumptious Fischbrötchen, or fish sandwich, followed by an ice-cold Flensburger Pils, all while marveling at the array of impressive Three-Masters set against the harbor skyline. Fish naturally makes up an important part of local cuisine and is usually accompanied by hearty potatoes. Flensburg features numerous shopping opportunities, the most famous of which lies in the Altstadt district, the Old Town. This area is made up of several large pedestrian streets lined with shops selling everything and anything. Architecture aficionados will also enjoy the well restored patrician and merchants' houses dating from the 18th and 19th century which can be found in this area of Flensburg.

Take advantage of your Flensburg rental car

Flensburg’s city center is less than five miles from the Danish border, which makes trips into the country convenient and well worth your time. If you wish to discover more of the history and intricacies of Danish and German relations, you can visit the Düppeler Schanzen located not far across the Danish border. Here the decisive battle was fought in the 1864 war, and the site has since been turned into a museum.

Nine kilometers northeast of Flensburg is Schloss Glücksburg, an impressive 16th century castle and the most important building of the Renaissance era found in Schleswig-Holstein, the state where Flensburg is located. Here you can view a multitude of intricate tapestries, old pictures, and other items prominent during those times.

You can also take your rental car on the approximately 100 mile route to the city of Hamburg; this will give you a chance to test your rental car on the famous German Autobahns or highways. Hamburg, also a port city, features a vibrant night-life, multicultural atmosphere, and impressive architecture. Another close drive is to the city of Kiel to visit another beautiful city with a strong connection to the sea. Lübeck is also a close drive, where you can learn about the historical trading route through the Hanseatic League.
