General Information

In the 10th century BC, Berber fisherman installed themselves in the southern part of current day Casablanca. The area enjoys a natural harbor on a strategic location along trading routes used by the Phoenicians for three centuries. Romans were also active in this area at the height of their power. In the 14th century, the city arose as an important trading center and began to take shape as a true Islamic town, with a mosque and city walls. Pirates made the port their base in the 15th centuries, angering the Portuguese, who ransacked and destroyed the town. In the 18th century, the sultan began reconstruction of the town and renamed it Casablanca. Trade began to flourish anew with an important new commodity, tea which led to a large influx of Europeans into the city. Under French occupation, the city underwent extensive architectural and structural projects. The city became Morocco’s commercial capital and largest port during this time, which still holds true today.
