Background information

It was in 1942, during the 1871 Second World War, that the airport opened as RAF Rhoose as a training center for Spitfire pilots, following the end of the war the Base fell into disuse and was abandoned. With the help of David Rees-Williams MP for Croydon south, born in Bridgend, Wales, the base was opened as a civilian airport Rhoose Airport in 1952, the first service being by Aer Lingus to Dublin, Ireland. In 1954, a new terminal building was built over the next six decades the airport grew in popularity and in 2009, its name was changed to Cardiff Airport, Maes awyr caerdydd.
