Canberra attractions and Travel Tips

Canberra, the purpose-built capital of Australia, is the largest inland city in the country and the heart of national politics. The oft-maligned offspring of a disagreement between Sydney and Melbourne is a meticulously planned city with symbolic architecture that echoes understated modernism. While it was established as late as 1913 only really fully completed in the late 1960's, its museums and galleries have become repositories of the artifacts and artworks that have defined Australia’s modern history and character.

Though there is a large concentration of bureaucrats and students in Canberra, a night the city’s bohemian roots come out. With it’s beautiful, rolling natural surroundings, along with a significant incorporation of areas of natural vegetation into the city, they have given Canberra the moniker of Bush Capital.

What’s more, thanks to its central location in between other well developed cities in the south, the possibilities with a Canberra car rental practically open up a large part of this vast country. In just a few clicks you can have your ideal car booked at an affordable price when you book through the online comparison portal HAPPYCAR. HAPPYCAR is here to help you find the best car hire Canberra has to offer so you can take full advantage of this visionary city with a direct car hire Canberra Airport also available. We check the prices of international and local providers so that you don’t have to check each website to provide you with the best deals to make your money go further on a rental car that fits your specific vacation needs.

General Information

When Australian colonies united in 1901 a capital city had to be chosen and Melbourne and Sydney were eager rivals. In an attempt to avoid choosing one, Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin won a competition to design a new capital in its own capital territory and the wheel-and-spoke city of Canberra was born.

Today the city is known as a made-to-order metropolis, but there is far more to it under the surface – excellent cocktail bars, a vast, superb range of restaurants, more per capita than anywhere else in the country, and a lively student population. There is more than plenty to keep you occupied for a few days to learn about the history of the country.

As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is the site of the subterranean Parliament House which was built under a hill, it seems to highlight Australia’s distaste for pomp and circumstance. Canberra is also a home for a great many national institutions such as the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery, the National Botanical Gardens, the National Museum, the National Library and the Australian National University, with no better place to learn about the modern Australian story. There are also a great number of festivals and events available all year round, including Floridae, an annual festival of flowers every spring.

Using a car hire in Canberra

The design of Canberra is completely geared towards using a car to explore the city and its scenic natural surrounds and most attractions in Canberra provide parking, usually at no extra cost. What’s more, the road network is excellent and usually open, making for an enjoyable driving experience. Close by is the Namadgi National Park, a beautiful expanse of trees with grey kangaroos and fascinating aboriginal art.

A drive east to the south coast is an excellent spot for fishing, surfing or just relaxing, and there is some superb rugged scenery to take in around Jervis Bay.

Aside from the vast array of things to do with a car rental Canberra in the surrounding areas, you can also reach major cities in the area, such as Sydney and Melbourne, and plenty more besides. There is so much to see in this part of the world, and a Canberra car hire can help you uncover some of the many mysteries just waiting to be discovered. Book now with HAPPYCAR and make your Australian dreams a reality.
