Cagliari attractions and Travel Tips

Nestled between the North African coast of Tunisia and the Italian mainland, the fiercely independent Sardinia can seem a country of its own. Tourism is ripe on the island and its capital Cagliari is a popular draw for its Roman architecture and fantastic restaurants showcasing sumptuous Sardinian food. HAPPYCAR is here to help you find the best car hire Cagliari has to offer so you can take full advantage of this historic city. We check the prices of international and local providers so that you don’t have to check each website and provide you with the best deals to make your money go further on a rental car that fits your specific vacation needs.

General Information

Sardinia is an ancient land with its geologic origins significantly older than other Italian regions. Due to its strategic position in the region, it was occupied by many civilizations during its history. This may go some way to explain the 7000 mysterious and uniquely Sardinian stone pillars called Nuraghi, that are strewn across the landscape. Cagliari in particular houses some of the best-preserved Roman remains on the island, ringed with Pisan fortifications and complemented by serene lagoons nearby. Cagliari is the most densely populated city on the island and still retains much of its tradition that has yet to be marred by tourism.

To Do

There is much to do in Sardinia and Cagliari hosts a number of beautiful beaches nearby, including Sant’Antioco and Poetto Beach, that provides visitors with a wealth of outdoor activities. you can go sailing and diving, or just the opportunity to relax in the languid sun. Trekking and horseback riding is also a favored activity, choosing to head inland to the more remote, less Italian areas of the island.

Attractions

There are a number of well-known sites that are worth visiting in Cagliari. The Castle District, Castello, is the oldest and highest part of the city and the most iconic image. The Bastione San Remy can be found here, sporting 19th century imperialist facades. There is a beautiful archaeological museum with a collection of neuralgic statuettes and a beautiful Gothic cathedral that was once home to the island’s religious elite. Cagliari also houses an impressive Roman amphitheatre.

Eating

Cagliari is an excellent example of traditional Sardinian food, with suckling pig and seafood, especially lobster, a highlight of the menu. Fish stews are also incredibly popular around Cagliari, and the pasta dishes are substantial – culurgiones are massive ravioli filled with cheese and egg, and is a staple of the island. Bread is also prized here and ranges from thin and crispy to rustic and crunchy loaves with plenty of pastries to be found. Nightlife is popular in Cagliari, and Sardinian white wines stand out very well with the hefty diet of fish.

Excursions

Cagliari is usually the first port of call to visitors of Sardinia, which makes for a great base from which to discover more of the island. Without a car on the island, however, you will severely limit how fast you travel and where you go so a car hire in Cagliari is well worth it to visit some of the more remote areas. Many beaches are accessible with a Cagliari car rental, most notably Poetto, which also doubles up as a popular event location in the summer. If you decide to hop over to mainland Italy with your Cagliari car hire it should be possible with a ferry, and you can explore memorable cities like Rome and Naples close by. Book now through the online HAPPYCAR comparison portal to make your Italian vacation dreams a reality.
