General information

Located in the Flemish regions of Belgium, but with a high proportion of French speakers, the city of Brussels is the capital of Belgium, and sometimes referred to as the capital of the European Union as its hosts the seats of the European Commission, Council of the European Union and the second seat of the European Parliament. The city is also home to other multi-national institutions such as the NATO headquarters.

Sites

Atomium, measuring at 102 meters, the icon is a sort of Space Age looking statue consisting of nine Large spheres connected by steel tubes, built for the 1958 World Fair Expo as a symbol for progress. Each sphere contains a different exhibition and there is a restaurant located inside as well. The building is one Brussels' most famous and recognizable symbols.

The Grand Place is in the central square of Brussels and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will find many historical and beautiful buildings in the town square such as the Brussels Town Hall, dating back to the 15th century and the museum of the history of Brussels and the Guildhalls.

The Manneken Pils, made in the 1600's, is a sculpture is of a young boy urinating. It is one of Brussels most famous landmarks and the boy has hundreds of outfits and wears several different ones a week. There are many tales about the boy and the statue ranging from, the boy urinating on attacking troops from the top of a tree whom eventually lost the battle or the boy urinating on the fuse of a bomb placed into the city thus putting out the fuse and saving city or when a boy went missing his father promised that should he find him he will build a statue commemorating what he was doing at that exact moment.

Parc du Cinquantenaire is a public park commemorating the 50th anniversary of Belgian Independence, The park is 74 acres and has many gardens, waterfalls and ponds. The park is also home to a U shaped complex with the Arc de Triomphe at the center. The complex is home to the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History, which showcases weapons, uniforms, vehicles and has a hall dedicated to air and space.

Belgium is one the leading beer brewing countries in the world, so whilst in the capital take your hire car Brussels to a bar or one of the breweries, be careful to have a designated driver!
