General Info On Brunswick

Brunswick was originally inhabited by the Abenaki Indians before Thomas Purchase and other fishermen settled here in 1628. After more than 80 years of conflict with the local natives, a treaty brought peace in 1713 which enabled the English colonists to begin developing and investing here. For instance, a consortium from Portsmouth and Boston bought a large parcel of land and set up quite a number of business. After a few years of tension between the English colonists and the Abenaki warriors, peace was restored in 1724. A lot of damage had been done by this time and the city extensively destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1727 after which there was a population influx especially after it was incorporated as a town in 1739. The city thrived economically in the late 1800s when cotton farming was introduced which saw the set up of manufacturing companies which made yarn. During this period most of the workers who came in search of jobs from these companies decided to reside here permanently.
