Biarritz attractions and Travel Tips

Car rental Biarritz

Let yourself be enchanted by the French charm of Biarritz. Explore the city in the extreme south-west of France with your rental car and discover the beauty of the famous lake and spa on the French Atlantic coast.

Whether a stroll along the beautiful beach or a trip into the hinterland of Biarritz with a rental car, you are always flexible and can plan your holiday individually.

Experience the highlights of Biarritz with the rental car

Visit the Musée de la Mer, the marine museum of Biarritz. Over 150 species of fish from the Atlantic and the tropics can be visited here. Highlights include the shark grotto and the seal pool. The large side glass walls provide impressive insights into the underwater world. You can also learn about the history of Basque fishing. Small panels, exhibits, boat models as well as various nautical devices show the story in an impressive way.

The journey by car will take you to the Rocher de la Vierge, the Rock of The Blessed Virgin. It represents a rocky reef with a white Madonna with a child. The rocky reef is completely enclosed by the water and is one of Biarritz's landmarks. The statue of Mary was installed in 1864 on a rock formation. It should remind you of the safe return of local fishermen and support them as patrons. You can reach the Virgin’s Rock by a bridge. Napoleo III came to the idea of connecting the rocky reef with the mainland. No one else than Gustave Eiffel used the idea in 1887 with an iron bridge, which can be walked over wooden planks. You should not miss the historical rock cliff.

Biarritz is also home to the lighthouse. From here, you have a wonderful view over the city, the sea and the coast. In good weather, you can even spot the peaks of the Pyrenees.

Explore Biarritz by car

If you want to enjoy the sun a bit and to recharge your batteries, the Grand Plage is just right. Impressive rocks frame the fine, bright sandy beach. Let your soul dangle or stroll along the wide beach promenade. Not to be missed here is the Hotel du Palais, the former imperial palace. An impressive building, still today the charm of the past days lives.

On the history of the city as well as on the time of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, you can get a good impression at the Musée Historique.

You should not miss the rocky spur in the north of the city. To the south, you can explore the attractive and beautiful sandy beach Plage Miramar behind the cliff. The rolling waves of the Atlantic flood the rocks on the coast. So far that even some villas on the upper edge of the cliff are no longer habitable. It is a natural spectacle, which is definitely worth a trip with the rental car.

Experience the imperial Biarritz with the rental car

Visit the Orthodox Church St-Alexandre-Newsky, inaugurated in 1892, with the two imposing domes, reminiscent of the earlier period of the Tsarist Russia's high nobility.

The Chapelle Imperiale is also reminiscent of the times of the Imperial Highnesses. The chapel is built in the Spanish-Moorish and neo-Byzantine style, built by Empress Eugénie in a former park site in 1864.

Furthermore, the already mentioned Hotel du Palais is worth a stop with the rental car. If you want, you can also spend one night in the five star hotel. Listen to the sound of the sea while you reside like the one-time Hochadel. The exterior façade makes the imperial era very clear. The magnificently ornamented and red-colored building is beautifully displayed. Inside, you will feel transported back to the imperial era and will be able to see how the nobility resided earlier. Take advantage of the opportunity to discover the beautiful French cities of Bordeaux and Toulouse.

Whether you want to spend days at the beach or discover the sights of the city, with a rental car from HAPPYCAR you are always flexible and can customize your holiday.
