General Information
Balinese culture has been strongly influenced by Indian, Chinese, and especially Hindu culture, beginning around the 1st century AD. During the second half of the 19th century, the Dutch East India Company assumed colonial control of most of the Indonesian archipelago, which lasted some two and a half centuries. Before colonization, Bali was a relatively independent society mainly consistent of Hindus, despite the Islamicization of most of Bali’s neighbors. Indonesia declared its independence in 1945 following the expulsion of the Japanese occupiers, and Bali soon after, in 1949, became an autonomous state within the republic.
Take advantage of your Bali car hire
Bali is a small island, and can be circumnavigated in a day. With a rental car, you will be able to explore the island at your own leisure, and take advantage of the many sights, sounds, and attractions Bali has to offer. The islands most famous resort is Kuta, an 5 mile sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation and the best shopping and nightlife on the island. Surfers will want to head for the surfing beaches on the Bukit peninsula and along Bali’s southwest coast. For a more relaxing and less commercialized experience, you can visit the peaceful island of Nusa Lembongan, or head over to the beaches on the east-coast of the island; Amed, Candi Dasa, and Padang Bai offer incredibly rich sea life perfect for snorkeling. Further along the north coast, in Lovina, you can go dolphin watching, an unforgettable experience. If you wish to experience true Balinese culture, you can drive over to Ubud, one of Bali’s main cultural centers. Traditional dances are staged every night and the streets are a lively mishmash of locals and tourists; hanging out in one of the many cafes or admiring art at one of the arts-and-crafts galleries are favorite pastimes. You can also explore the numerous magnificent Hindu temples, mainly the ones at Tanah Lot and Besakih. Volcanic hikes are also a big pull for the area; the challenging trails provide trekkers with majestic views of the surrounding area.
Take your car on a ferry west to the neighboring island of Java, specifically to the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta. The vibrant city is Indonesia’s cultural, economic, and political center; here you can still find the remnants of Indonesia’s extensive colonial past. Kota, also known as old Jakarta, is located in the north; this 16th century Dutch neighborhood is home to several important historical structures, including the former city hall of Batavia, the Fish Market, and the former court of justice of Batavia. Nearby is Sunda Kelapa, Jakarta’s lively old port. In addition to the harbor, you will also find the Harbor-Master Tower, the Maritime Museum, Fatahillah Museum, Arts Museum, Beos Station, and Wayang Pupppet Museum.
